Ulu Mauli Ola: Day 2

Day two of our Ulu Mauli Ola retreat was a busy day. Being in Kapoho, in an area near the easternmost point of Hawaiʻi, we decided to start with a trip to Kumukahi. On day one we let go of the old, on day two, it started with the new, greeting the sun at the start of a new day.
We chanted an oli, Aia i Kumukahi, right before the sun broke through the horizon and chanted until it was right above it. It was a great feeling.

Kumukahi

The sun after our greeting.

Some random guy that came out from the rocks took our picture. I guess along with the sun, we woke him up too.

We went to Lava Tree State Park.

We went to Green Lake. But we passed on the swim.

Look at all that kukui!

We collected, stripped, washed, and made hau. Too bad I didn't get a pic of the finished product.

I taught some hei, or string figures.

We did some hula.

We made hoʻokupu.

After dinner with some of our families, our hoʻokupu was later taken with us to Kalapana and left for Pele. Even though the lava was far by that time, we could see some bursts of flame at some points during our chanting. You had to have been there.
