The morning started off with a call from Tai's co-worker. It was 2a and he needed to head out to work because there was a tsunami warning as a result of the earthquake in Chile measuring 8.8 on the Richter Scale which happened at about 8:30p Hawaiʻi time on the previous night. We had actually planned for myself to go out with Tai to Kohala and go to the beach with our friends after he finished work. Well, no beach for us during a tsunami warning. Just our luck. We haven't planned to go to the beach in over a year and the one time that we do, tsunami warning. Oh well.
So Tai was off to Kohala to close off the county beach parks, while I sat in front of the television watching local news already in progress. They were on it, keeping everyone fully informed, and glued to their television sets. They predicted that the first wave would arrive in Hilo at 11:19a. The sun wasn't even up yet. Hmmm. So what does one do while waiting for a tsunami? Catch up on their blog and Facebook. :) If you noticed, I did a total of 5 posts during the tsunami warning, and I still had 2 hours before the predicted first wave. So I spent the rest of the time with Guy Hagi and his news team watching the surges around Mokuola (Coconut Island). Even though that was pretty much it, you have to admit that it was pretty cool and that we have to be thankful that nothing destructive happened.
I'm sure a lot of us watched that video of the surges by Mokuola, so I decided to post this instead. Pretty cool.
