It is not uncommon to hear fireworks and see smoke coming from around graveyards on New Years Day. Families will visit their loved ones and set off fireworks, including them in their celebration. That is what we do for my father. It's just another thing our family does over the holidays. If my memory serves me right, we have done this since his passing. After our yearly New Years Day lunch with our Kobashigawa relatives, we head out to the Valley of the Temples to spend some time with "Papa". The kids all know this and will gather some fireworks to pop for Papa. Maybe a little fountain, and a string of magic whip shaped into a heart over his site. Of course the kids will set off morning glorys, the ones that make the most smoke, but it's for Papa. It's funny because dad's grave is near the main road and we end up smoking them out a bit. :) Oh well.
